Tree Skirt and Door Wreath

Mr Fiance and I are celebrating our first Christmas living together. So we have slowly discovered that while we have many generic Christmas decorations but we wanted a few specific things.

The first was a door wreath. Rather than go out and spend $30 (or more) on a wreath from one of the stores or buying a pine needle wreath that would eventually die I found some other blogs online. Most suggested going to the local hardware store and purchasing the foam pipe covers and taping the ends together to form the backing to the wreath. So I found a set of 4 tubes for about $2.50 at our local big box store and brought them home. I duct taped the ends together to form a basic circle with one of them.

I then busted out my hot glue gun, some glue sticks, and a bag full of bows that one would normally use to wrap packages. I discovered that while the bows would stick, they usually melted part of the foam. Still, as long as enough of the glue cooled and was connected to the foam the bows stuck. I simply attached a variety of different shapes, sizes and colors to the "wreath"
I found this little guy in the $1 ornament section at Target. I hotglued him straight on top of the bows and made sure he was completely dry before I hung the wreath.
This (above) was what the wreath looked like when it was completely finished.

The second project I figured out needed to be completed was a tree skirt. Call us silly or old-fashioned but we just love real trees with pine needles that fall all over the floor. This o course meant needing a tree skirt. Thus, I went out to Target to find the cheapest one possible. They had two great red felt ones that were $5/each. I picked up the one with the scalloped edge because it meant I would not have to do anything to fancy up the edge. While I was there, I hit up the $1 ornament bins again and found some great felt snowflakes and angels.

When I got the skirt home, I ironed it to get all the folds out of it and to make it flat. I then fired up the old hot glue gun and simply glued on the snowflakes and angels at various spots around the tree skirt. Our tree was set up this weekend and the skirt has been a nice addition to the base. We have not had many people over yet but so far, those who have seen it liked it.

My mother did point out, when I told her about it over the phone, that the felt might run into the carpet if it got wet when we watered the tree. She suggested putting black garbage bags down underneath the skirt so that they would pick up the color if there were issues. Another way to prevent the felt from running would be to spray it with Scotch Guard. I had plenty of garbage bags in my supplies, so that's what we went with.
